Okay, so here's a not questionable idea:

Randomly select clay pot (pitcher) contents on spawn.
Hexen always has exactly the same item in each clay pitcher. If you know which is which, you can skip the ones with monsters. Contents

Nice one, but chances should be higher for simplier items and lower for valuable items, ofcourse.
